Hewlett-Packard worldwide has pulled together all its storage activities into one business unit, the HP Network Storage Solutions Organisation (NSSO).
The move is in line with a global HP restructure, taken to reinforce the company`s commitment to meeting customers` storage needs and providing a single-point of storage resource.
"We want to strengthen our leadership position in delivering the most comprehensive level of management and integration of storage software and devices," says Graeme Smith, who heads up the South African NSSO.
"We`re one of a few vendors playing a leading role across the entire storage device market - from direct-attached and NAS (network-attached storage) to SAN (Storage Area Network) device management, backup and network and systems management."
Two recent storage solutions released by HP illustrate the company`s commitment to maximise customers` storage investment.
The HP Surestore Disk System 2100, the HP Surestore Tape Array 5300 feature industry-leading interconnect speeds, high density and scalability, quick deployment and manageability.
HP Surestore Disk System 2100
The HP Surestore Disk System 2100 is an inexpensive, high performance, 1U rack optimised, 4-slot disk system that provides a flexible, compact solution for desk-side, desktop and rack configurations. The DS2100 supplies density packing of 293GB into 1U of rack space. With industry-leading Ultra 3 SCSI interconnect speeds of 160MB/s supporting 18GB, 36GB and 73GB drives, the DS2100 will improve performance to an Ultra 4 SCSI speed of 320MB/s when available.
Featuring hot-swappable disks for easy maintenance operation, the DS2100 supports daisy chaining up to three enclosures on a single channel reducing downtime and increasing flexibility.
The DS2100 offers rack optimisation, flexible configuration options and multi-platform and OS support allowing storage to be easily redistributed to meet customers` changing storage requirements. Customers can also achieve high availability through mirroring of two DS2100 enclosures or clustering.
With the lowest cost of entry of any similar disk system, the DS2100 offers a broad solution allowing customers to easily expand their storage capacity in a variety of environments:
Added capacity in mid- to low-end NetServer environments
Low-cost RAID solution behind an internal disk array controller
Two enclosures mirrored or clustered for high availability, low-cost solution
Dedicated, low-cost storage for xSPs in a web hosting or load-balancing environment
HP Surestore Tape Array 5300
The HP Surestore Tape Array 5300 offers the most flexible, scalable and cost-effective racked backup solution on the market. The Tape Array 5300 meets the needs of IT managers of medium-sized organisations who have a rack environment and require a scalable, heterogeneous backup solution capable of supporting a variety of tape technologies to minimise the backup window.
Providing flexibility and scalability, the 5300 is ideal for service providers with changing and increasing data storage requirements. With the greatest optimisation of rack space, the Tape Array 5300 holds one to four drives or DVD devices in a 19" 3U rack enclosure. The 5300 provides 24-800GB compressed capacity and a maximum transfer rate of 60MB/s when using Ultrium 215 drives (see related release).
Customers requiring varying levels of data protection benefit from the versatility of the 5300, which supports any full-height and half-height HP Surestore rack modules including Ultrium 230, Ultrium 215, S-DLT, DLT80, DLT1, DAT40, DAT24, and DVD-ROM.
The 5300`s modular design allows customers to expand to four drives as their capacity requirements grow and features optional high availability and manageability functionality through upgrade options.
