HP solution sets new colour printing standards for Africa

Johannesburg, 06 Jun 2002

HP is once again raising the performance, quality and ease-of-use bar - and offering small, medium and large organisations an advanced solution to their colour printing needs - with today`s launch of the HP Colour LaserJet 4600 series printers.

More than simply a quality colour laser printer, the new solutions represent HP`s first delivery of a device based on `in-line` printing technology; they are also powerful, reliable and Web-enabled.

"The `in-line` technology stacks four print cartridges vertically which enables colour to be printed in a single pass, rather than in four passes as is common in other technologies," explains Lorna Hardie, the business development manager for HP`s imaging and printing solutions in English-speaking African countries.

"As a result, the Colour LaserJet 4600 can print up to 16 A4 pages per minute, regardless of whether the page is a monochrome e-mail or a high quality four colour page. The vertical in-line technology doesn`t require a larger operating space either."

From a power and performance standpoint, the printer is driven by a 400MHz PA-RISC processor and up to 416MB of RAM. It uses firmware and hardware enhancements to reduce calibrations, thus maximising printer uptime. A simple paper path helps avoid paper jams and deliver on a monthly duty cycle of up to 85 000 pages.

"We`re also looking at some of the highest quality output with this new solution, thanks to a combination of a colour-trapping technology and HP genuine printer supplies," adds Hardie. "Users can expect crisp text, more detailed graphics and overall photo-realistic printing results."

From a Web standpoint, it`s possible to manage the LaserJet 4600 via a Web interface using either the embedded Web server (EWS) by installing HP`s Web Jetadmin software. Third-party printing e-services are also available, offering secure document delivery via the Internet and automatic printing capabilities. "More customised printing e-services can be provided by downloading Java-compliant HP Chai applets on the embedded virtual machine of the printer ... this makes it a fully-fledged Internet-ready device."

HP Colour LaserJet 4600 series will be available through HP`s network of authorised colour printer resellers across Africa from early July this year. For details of those partners - as well as more information on HP solutions and activities in Africa - visit www.hp.com/africa

Fact file

Some technological enhancements in the Colour LaserJet 4600 include:

* Colour-trapping technology implemented by HP eliminates wrong colour registration and prevents the white from the paper showing through the colour text and graphics;

* Smart `edge control` features developed by HP smooth the jagged edges on light-coloured text and graphics;

* Second generation chemically-grown toners ensure uniform distribution of colour, improved pigments and gloss properties result in wider colour gamut and better colour appearance;

* Dynamic electrophotographic adjustment makes possible consistently outstanding print quality. A smart chip integrated in each print cartridge compensates altered charging characteristics of toner particles by readjusting electrophotographic voltages throughout all stages of a cartridge`s life.
