HP South Africa unveils wireless-ready, ultra-thin notebook PC for highly mobile professionals

Johannesburg, 30 Nov 2000

Hewlett-Packard South Africa has unveiled its new, ultra thin, mobile PC, the HP OmniBook 500 Notebook PC series. Designed specifically for highly mobile professionals, the sleek new notebook weighs less than 1.6kg and is just 2.5cm thin.

"It heralds a new generation of mobile PC," says Adrian Delport, Market Development manager, Business PCs at HP South Africa. "It`s wireless ready, which means that users, in addition to being able to use it with HP wireless accessories, will be able to immediately leverage the upcoming Bluetooth wireless technology - no more wires and docking stations just instant linking to the office ."

The HP OminBook 500 Notebook PC is powered by the fastest, low-voltage, Intel Pentium III processors up to 700 MHz or Intel Celeron processors at 500MHz. It supports up to 512MB RAM, a 12-inch XGA TFT display and 8Mb video memory.

"Despite its high-end performance and extensive expansion options, the OmniBook 500 is going to be priced very competitively and we`re expecting it to become a best-seller in among highly mobile executives who need maximum power and portability packaged in a stylish industrial design," adds Delport.

It should prove particularly attractive to mobile professionals who make frequent presentations. The HP OmniBook 500 Notebook PC features a presentation-ready hot key so that users, such as sales personnel, can open up a presentation at a touch of a button.

In addition, while in this presentation ready mode, users can also set presentation mode features such as the ability to disable system timeouts and screen savers, and output to VGA off TV.

The new notebook`s multimedia expansion base is a feature-rich resource with outstanding video and audio features. It features two multi-bays, full I/O replication, including LAN pass through, to enable cable management, parallel, serial, P/S/2 and S-video ports.

The multi-bay options include secondary battery, FDD, CD, CD-RW, DVD zip drive, LS-120 and second HDD. Polk Audio stereo sound and external audio controls allow users to enjoy CD music without the notebook being powered up.

The notebook has been designed to maximise battery life, while it durability is ensured though the use of magnesium casing and rubberised display cover and spill-resistant keyboard.

The HP OmniBook 500 Notebook PC comes with a one-year warranty and is due for release in February 2001.
