HP tackles cloud cost uncertainty

Johannesburg, 10 Feb 2010

HP has added enhancements to its cloud computing solution, HP Cloud Assure, to address the variable costs associated with cloud computing.

Frank Gens, senior vice-president and chief analyst, IDC, points out that cost uncertainty is the top concern for organisations adopting cloud computing.

“Businesses are increasingly looking to adopt cloud computing to gain from increased elasticity and agility, but lack the understanding of the true costs associated with delivering and consuming cloud services,” Gens explains.

According to an HP statement, cloud computing enables IT resources to expand or contract based on demand. Businesses that see degradation in application performance may try to solve the problem by purchasing more cloud computing resources, explains HP.

However, it warns this may not result in the expected performance gains and could lead to unpredictable costs.

“While elasticity is a key cloud computing benefit, it can also lead to an increase in costs if businesses don't use the right planning,” says Clive Brindley, solutions architect, HP Software and Solutions, SA.

HP says its solution can control variable costs by measuring resource utilisation with HP Elastic Test. Cloud consumers have the ability to tune the application's cloud footprint to ensure all services levels are met at the most predictable cost. HP Elastic Test is also supported through Amazon Web Services.
