HP Taiwan expects notebook growth
Hewlett-Packard (HP) Taiwan hopes to grab a bigger share of the notebook computer market in Taiwan, with volume growth of over 10% in the sector.
Statistics from research firm International Data Corp (IDC) indicate that in the third quarter of last year, Asustek Computer and Acer were the leaders in the local notebook market, with Lenovo taking the third spot. HP Taiwan came in at number four, reports Taipei Times.
Last year, the computer industry did not see major technological improvements, prompting vendors to slash prices in a bid to boost notebook shipments, says Dennis Chen VP of HP Taiwan`s personal system group. "As there are a slew of new computer technology available this year, vendors who win more market share will be those pushing new computer products in an aggressive manner," says Chen.
Dell to use AMD?
A financial analyst has predicted that Dell will finally drop its use of Intel chips in 2006 and introduce servers based on Advanced Micro Devices` Opteron processors, reports PC World.
Ever since AMD`s Opteron came onto the market, Dell has scrambled to explain why it has continued to exclude AMD`s chips from its portfolio despite the performance advantage of the Opteron over Intel`s Xeon. There`s also a widespread industry belief that Dell receives preferential treatment, such as early product introductions and discounts on chip purchases, for remaining loyal to Intel, the article claims.
Many analysts also believe that in order to maintain that preferential treatment, Dell occasionally floats suggestions within the media and analyst community that it is thinking about switching to AMD`s chips.
