Hewlett-Packard South Africa has introduced the industry`s first open-standards-based half-height tape drive with a transfer speed of 15MB a second and capacity of up to 200GB (compressed) on a single tape.
The new HP SureStore Ultrium 215 has been designed for the midrange corporate and service provider markets where there is an increasing need for fast, affordable, high volume, hassle-free backup.
"Faced with decreasing backup windows due to e-commerce ERP, OLTP and other 24X7 applications, IT managers today have to back up data in less time and at a lower cost," says Graham Smith, Storage Sales Manager HP South Africa.
"As part of HP`s next-generation family of truly open tape format products, the Ultrium 215 eliminates the need for organisations to deploy and support multiple storage technologies for midrange and enterprise systems in the future."
The Ultrium 215`s half-height form factor allows for easy configuration into multiple servers, rack and automation environments, including space constrained mid-range servers and low-cost autoloaders.
Its 200MB capacity and high 15MB/s transfer rate make it the most affordable backup solution for the mid-range market, combining the lowest cost per GB with the best in its class performance.
"The Ultirum 215 enables small to medium business to meet their increasing data protection needs at a much lower cost per GB," says Smith.
HP has outlined a four-generation Ultrium roadmap for the decade ahead. It plans to double performance and capacity with each generation, eventually reaching 1.6Tb capacity and a transfer rate of 1Tb an hour.
"This means anyone can standardise on the Ultrium format with confidence that is has real longevity," he adds.
