Drive Control Corporation (DCC) has introduced HP's StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1840 Tape Drive, the company's first LTO-4 tape drive capable of storing up to 1.6TB per cartridge.

The latest version of Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology, LTO-4, offers a native, uncompressed capacity of 800GB, which is double the capacity of LTO-3, as well as transfer rates of up 120Mbps.

When 2-to-1 compression is enabled, LTO-4 can achieve 1.6TB of storage, with effective transfers of 240Mbps, as in the case of HP's latest tape drive.

HP's Ultrium 1840 Tape Drive, for example, offers AES 256-bit hardware encryption that protects sensitive and prevents the unauthorised access of tape cartridges. The 1840 tape drives perform the 256-bit AES encryption by using Galois Counter Mode (GCM), which delivers high speeds and low latency, according to a press release.

"By doubling the capacity of previous generation Ultrium drives, HP is now providing fewer data cartridges to meet business storage needs, which in turn reduces IT costs and increase ROI," says Rudi van Rensburg, HP storage specialist at DCC.

The Ultrium 1840 Tape Drive is also backwards compatible with full read-and-write support for LTO-3 media and read ability for LTO-2 cartridges.
