HP to reduce energy usage

HP has made a public commitment to reduce the energy consumption of its volume desktop and notebook PC families by 25% by 2010, says SDA Asia.

Making the announcement at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), HP also said it has more than two dozen PCs registered in North America at either the Gold or Silver EPEAT rating levels.

The EPEAT system helps shoppers evaluate, compare and select desktop computers, notebooks and monitors based on the products' environmental attributes. EPEAT evaluates electronic products according to three tiers of environmental performance: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Eee PC in more Oz stores

Asus Australia's Eee PC is now available at nine outlets, following Myer's exclusive deal to sell the ultra-portable on debut, says Australian IT.

Apart from Myer, the $499 laptop can be purchased from Betta Electrical, David Jones, Good Guys, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Retravision, Wow Sight & Sound and Officeworks.

The Eee PC has made the headlines across the globe, with reports of it being sold out hours after going on sale. In Australia it was no different. Thousands of units sold quickly when Myer opened its Sydney CBD store on 1 December. By 12.30pm, they were all gone.

Quanta raises notebook target

Quanta has raised its 2008 shipment target by 11% to meet demand, as the majority of consumers move away from desktop PCs, says Reuters.

The company now expects to ship about 40 million notebook PCs this year, up from a previous target of 36 million, Carol Hsu, an investor relations officer, says.

She added that Quanta shipped 32 million notebook PCs last year, up from a previous forecast of 30 million.
