HP unveils power-saving server

Additions to HP's Thermal Logic portfolio include a new power-saving ProLiant server, power-capping server software and energy-efficiency services, reports eWeek.

The ProLiant server is designed to reduce operational costs and shrink centre carbon footprints by using a smaller power draw and less energy for air-cooling.

Thermal Logic is new software embedded in HP products and services that combines the measurement and control of power and cooling in data centres with energy-efficient product design.

Devon IT, CentriServ boost consolidation

Devon IT, a desktop solution company, and its sister-company, CentriServ, have rolled out a virtual desktop bundle utilising Devon IT thin clients, Citrix XenDesktop, VMware virtualisation software, and CentriServ consolidation services, says Market Watch.

The VDI-2 virtualisation starter kit is designed for companies that are rethinking their server infrastructure.

"Healthcare companies, schools, financial institutions, and an array of other enterprises are changing the way their IT infrastructures operate," says Joe Makoid, president of Devon IT. "The VDI-2 virtualisation starter kit offers firms free assessments to determine how to efficiently reduce across-the-board IT spending, including costs associated with energy usage, front-end implementation and replacement, and back-end management.

Lenovo targets SMEs

China-based PC manufacturer Lenovo has released its latest server line aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), states Computer World.

The entry level ThinkServer TS100 tower and RS110 rack servers come with Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel Xeon 3000 or 3200 processors, and are targeted at small offices for use as a Web server or for running simple applications such as e-mail and file storage.

Lenovo offers either Microsoft Windows Server or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell as operating systems for the ThinkServer line.
