HP updates Enterprise Virtual Array

Las Vegas, 07 Jun 2011

Driving business growth and operational agility in today's instant-on enterprise requires simple yet flexible solutions that reduce costs, while maintaining application availability.

This was the message from David Scott, senior VP and GM, HP storage, during a presentation at HP's Discover event, in Las Vegas, this week. "Most businesses allocate up to 70% of their resources to operational tasks," he added.

With this in mind, HP has updated its Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) storage solution, and introduced the HP P6000 EVA, which it describes as an easy-to-manage storage solution that lets clients consolidate application to reduce administration time and total cost of ownership.

"The P6000 represents HP's fifth-generation EVA. With an installed base of nearly 100 000 units across thousands of centres, the EVA is a proven solution for medium to large companies that need enterprise storage features on a modest budget," noted Scott.

The HP P6000 features connectivity, performance and efficiency enhancements, and is touted as a mid-range storage solution that is 20% to 30% easier to manage than competing alternatives.

"Array-based virtualisation capabilities significantly speed storage administration while increasing storage utilisation," he noted.

Scott said it also features thin provisioning technology for improved capacity utilisation and built-in dynamic storage tiering for easy data migration. Through the enhancements, clients can improve utilisation by up to 50% through purchasing capacity only as needed, he explained.

"In addition, clients can save time due to 20% faster administration versus competing arrays, which also speeds project cycle time, and also increase scalability with added capacity of up to 480TB."

He said other benefits include the ability to lower the data centre footprint with twice the enterprise capacity in the same rack space versus previous generations of the EVA, and also lower energy use by 40% with smaller form factor SAS drives that support the same workloads as the larger drives used in previous generations of EVAs.

"The product also allows clients to better manage data and optimise applications, while delivering continuous accessibility. It offers the ability to alter service levels associated with a storage volume without incurring downtime by using the Dynamic LUN Migration feature."

It also boosts business efficiencies with seamless integration into any environment via flexible native connectivity options that include 8Gb FC and 10Gb iSCSI or FCoE, Scott explained.

The HP P6000 EVA is available worldwide in June.
