HR focus at minerals processing technology organisation Mintek

To optimise its human resources processes, mineral and metallurgical research specialist Mintek is implementing a comprehensive human resource management system from global inter-enterprise software supplier, SAP Africa.

Mintek will use the SAP HR solution to optimise and automate the processes in its human resources department - from payroll accounting and compensation planning through to performance management and time and attendance.

Adriaan du Plessis, Head: HR at Mintek, reports that the organisation experienced a host of benefits from its implementation of the SAP financial software last year, including more efficient processing of transactions and improved visibility of information. He expects this project will bring these same benefits to the HR Division.

"Our existing mix of disparate HR applications has presented us with a range of support and performance issues - by moving to SAP's HR solution we will address these. By implementing a single HR package that is also tightly integrated with our financial software, we will also avoid duplication of training and support costs," says Du Plessis.

The integrated nature of the SAP software will give Mintek a solution that improves the flow of information throughout the enterprise and synthesises HR processes with business processes and line functions, adds Du Plessis.

The powerful workflow tools in the SAP HR solution will also help Mintek to streamline business processes throughout the HR department.

As the SAP HR modules share a common database with the other SAP modules already in use at Mintek, across the organisation will be complete, consistent and up to date.

This integration accelerates the flow of data and information between Mintek Divisions, reducing the margin for error and improving efficiency. For example, time and attendance data can be instantly transferred to the payroll accounting application, and in turn, payroll information can immediately be made available to the financial controlling and accounting modules.

Du Plessis says the SAP HR software includes localised content, such as powerful reporting tools that will allow Mintek to track its progress with HR plans and with government requirements.

SAP Africa will be working closely with Mintek as its for the HR implementation project, the first phase of which is scheduled for completion by March 2001.

Mintek will in the future look at the possibility of using the Web functionality of the SAP software to deploy advanced applications such as employee self-service, which will allow employees to access web-based HR services from their own workstations.
