Recent reports suggest HTC is preparing to launch a larger phablet-sized variant of its flagship HTC One smartphone, in addition to the smaller variant expected to be launched within the next few weeks.

German Web site MobileGeeks leaked the news yesterday, saying in addition to the mini-sized smartphone, the Taiwanese manufacturer is working on a six-inch screen version named the HTC One Max.

Rumours suggest the HTC One Max will feature a similar design to the current HTC One, complete with metal form factor. The device is said to be around 9.4mm thick, a little wider than the Samsung Galaxy Note III.

According to , it will feature a six-inch 1080p super LCD 3 display, a Qualcomm 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 chipset, 2GB of RAM, and a choice of either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage.

In the department, the HTC One Max is rumoured to have Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, although some reports say it is more likely to have Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, as Android 5.0 is only expected to be available in October.

While no pictures of the rumoured phablet are yet available, Mobileaks claims to have gotten hold of the blueprints of the device, previously referred to under the codename HTC T6.

Phablet battle?

Reports suggest the HTC One Max will be launched in early September, which should put it up against the Samsung Galaxy Note III pegged for release on 4 September.

The HTC One Max could be an attempt for the company to gain relevance in the phablet market which has been largely dominated by Samsung. A number of tech reports speculate on whether HTC can muster the supply-chain efficiency to deliver its HTC One Max, after production issues caused significant delay in the launch of the HTC One.

According to IT research firm Gartner, HTC was the world's 10th-biggest smartphone maker by shipments in the fourth quarter 2012.

The HTC One Max will be the company's first attempt at the phablet segment.
