Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, has donated 100 computers for Wanawake Na Maendeleo (WAMA) Foundation. The donation was timely since 8 March was the International Women's Day, with the theme “Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all”.
Commending on the donation in her role as the Executive Chair of the WAMA Foundation, Her Excellency First Lady Salma Kikwete said: “We are honoured by Huawei's gesture towards WAMA foundation and this will help us reach our goal to improve the living standards of women and capacity building for economic empowerment”. Huawei and WAMA co-operation begun in October 2008, after signing a joint memorandum of understanding (MOU) to focus on development of the nation, especially women.
Speaking during the event, Huawei Tanzania CEO Mr Yuan Song said: “Huawei's donation to WAMA is aimed to impact ICT knowledge and application to help bridge the digital divide, giving them an opportunity to join the information age. We believe in enriching people's lives through communication, and with these computers, we hope more women will have a chance to learn and utilise information technologies to enhance their lives and business.”
Huawei is also a member of the United Nations Global Compact, incorporating the values it advocates into the company's culture and business activities.
Mr Yuan added: “In the future, Huawei will continue to invest more in the Tanzanian communities through education, technology transfer, disaster relief, environment conservation, and contributions towards the public welfare.”
