Hyundai division chooses Sun Ultra 2 as additional server

Johannesburg, 06 Aug 1998

Hyundai`s Motor Distributors has migrated from Novell to a Unix platform, following installation of a Sun Ultra 2 server to run its powerful new BAAN business management system, for it`s Wheels Parts Distribution Centre.

According to IT manager, Thea Bezhuidenhout, top performance, reliability and excellent service back up helped secure the R180 000 deal for Q Vector Group company, Vector Technology, one of South Africa`s leading distributors for Sun Microsystems.

The deal was negotiated together with Johannesburg based software specialist, NJA, an authorised VAR for Vector Technology and long-time consultant to Hyundai.

"We needed to upgrade our systems, particularly on the distribution side and the Sun Box provided an extremely powerful all-round solution in accounting, production and distribution," says Bezuidenhout.

"Our Financial system, SPL Automate, is currently running on an HP K220 server. Subject to further development and growth an additional server was acquired. Comparative testing showed the Sun Ultra 2 offered perfect response times at lower cost."

The system was installed in July last year and besides running BAAN, the Sun Ultra 2 is also running Hyundai`s Stock tracking/distribution system which runs on an Informix database.

Approximately 64 Hyundai branches nation-wide are linked onto the wide area network via diginet lines or satellite transmission. All branches have concurrent dual access onto both the Sun and HP servers, allowing all branches around the country direct on-line access, 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

Both the Sun and HP servers are connected to an NT server, on which the company`s nation-wide internal email is operative. An existing EDI link between Hyundai Motor Distributors, S.A. and Hyundai Motor Corp, Korea ,allows for transferring of important data files.

The entire network is absolutely critical to the efficient daily operations of the company.

"Both systems are serving us well, accommodating current and extensive future growth. "
