iAnywhere outshines Microsoft, Oracle in cost of ownership

Johannesburg, 07 Aug 2002

iAnywhere Solutions, the mobile and division of Sybase SA, has announced results of a new Aberdeen Group study demonstrating the visible cost of ownership (VCO) of SQL Anywhere Studio to be significantly lower than Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Oracle9i.

The report found that, over a five-year period, SQL Anywhere Studio offers the lowest acquisition, administration and maintenance costs among the best mass-deployment embedded database products.

"The visible cost of ownership of SQL Anywhere Studio over five years is approximately three times less expensive than Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and eight times less expensive than Oracle9i," says Deon Engelbrecht, business development manager at iAnywhere Solutions SA. "The cost advantages of SQL Anywhere Studio increase as the size of the deployment increases, due to its low administration requirements."

SQL Anywhere Studio, a mobile management and enterprise synchronisation solution, enables rapid development and deployment of distributed e-business solutions. Optimised for workgroup, mobile and embedded applications, it extends the reach of a corporation's e-business information to "anywhere" business transactions.

Organisations need to evaluate zero administration solutions to offset rising IT staffing costs. Reliable, easily manageable technology and cost-effectiveness are two compelling criteria for choosing mass-deployment database technology, says Engelbrecht.

"SQL Anywhere Studio from iAnywhere Solutions consistently delivered lower costs across a range of embedded scenarios, from dozens of users to large-scale business workgroup deployments," says Wayne Kernochan, managing vice president, Databases, Development Environments, and Software Infrastructure at Aberdeen Group. "This product has gained a strong foothold in the embedded database market, our interviews indicate, because it provides solid performance and scalability while offering low maintenance and administration costs."
