With the announcement of its new high performance, integrated mid-market servers and operating system software tailored for e-businesses, IBM is taking definite steps in the Linux and storage attached network (SAN) spaces.
IBM recently announced worldwide availability of its new IBM eServer models, which it describes as loaded with enterprise server management solutions aimed at helping customers manage infrastructure complexity. Big Blue claims its eServer products can help customers reduce their costs by as much as 25%.
The IBM eServer iSeries systems are shipping with OS/400 version 5 release 1, which are being deployed with technologies such as dynamic logical partitioning, remote wireless management and high-speed adapter technology that allows an xSeries server to link to an iSeries capable of managing large networks of Windows servers.
The new servers also include native support for Linux in a logical partition. A single iSeries server can support up to 31 separate Linux partitions.
IBM eServer iSeries is powered by the latest generation of IBM Power microprocessors made with silicon-on-insulator transistors and copper wiring - a development which is expected to drive better throughput performance while reducing heat.
Pricing for the new iSeries servers and OS/400 Version 5 Release 1 starts at $11 200.
