Johannesburg, 20 Jun 2003

IBM SA has equipped a computer laboratory at Westbury High School with 20 computers as part of its upliftment programme for the Westbury community.

Alfred Mandewo, IBM SA corporate community relations manager, says the donation consists of 20 workstations, a server, a dot-matrix printer and . IBM SA will also sponsor the school`s access for one year.

"The donation forms part of IBM`s Mentor Place programme in which we identify communities that can be uplifted using IT equipment."

Mandewo says IBM will also partner the school by helping the teachers and pupils to use the technology donated to them.

"Technology is a great liberator, because it makes global resources available to even the poorest person. With this equipment, children will be able to aim for careers they might otherwise not have thought of. And it will help them develop capabilities that fit the modern workplace," Mandewo says.

As part of the programme, the school will also be partnered with a school from the US, which is currently being identified, he adds.

"We have sponsored the school`s Internet connection for a year and will help them to use it to communicate effectively with the world."

IBM will also donate PCs to the Westbury Library.
