IBM has inked a deal with database developer EnterpriseDB to bring an optimised open database platform to its Power server line.
The deal will allow the firms to offer the PostgreSQL database on Power servers. Based on the Linux platform, PostgreSQL is an open source postscript database platform designed for large enterprise deployments.
The companies believe the deal will bring the Power server line into the market for large-scale enterprise database and mission-critical server deployments. Among the companies' primary targets will be reigning enterprise database champion Oracle.
Ed Boyajian, chief executive of EnterpriseDB, told V3 that the combination of its database platform and IBM's high-end hardware platform will provide a formidable combination for high-performance and reliable deployments.
"I think the IBM Power technology is ideally suited for large and mission-critical deployments," said Boyajian. "We really see the opportunity to penetrate that class of customers who are looking for the highest level of system performance."
In particular, Boyajian sees vulnerability in Oracle's vertical integration approach. The strategy, which involves the combination of Oracle Database with the company's hardware and middleware platforms in dedicated appliances, could drive up prices for customers and lock them into systems they might otherwise not wish to commit to.
Looking to pull customers away from Oracle, EnterpriseDB is offering tools that can allow administrators and developers to easily migrate their applications from Oracle to the PostgreSQL platform.
"We have made significant enhancements in performance, scalability and reliability," Boyajian said. "You add advances IBM has made to their Power technology and I think that is a killer combination for displacing Oracle in some of the bigger enterprise environments."
