IBM forms wireless team

Johannesburg, 15 Apr 2004

IBM is building a team to make all of its technology and consulting skills available to its base through a single point of contact.

The team has been named the Wireless Pervasive E-business Team and is headed up by Dion Harvey.

Harvey says the team, which began operating at the beginning of the year and is currently being expanded, was established after a similar team was put into place at IBM`s UK branch.

"IBM has traditionally been divided into three groups - hardware, and consulting. However, we have now formed a single point of contact for our customers to provide them with our wireless-enabled hardware, software and consulting services from a single point of contact," he says.

The team`s task is to work with customers to help them understand the business value of IBM`s wireless solutions and articulate a return of investment for their business, Harvey says.

"The team currently comprises a mix of business consultants from traditional consulting and consultative sales backgrounds, and technical staff who are able understand and articulate all areas of IBM wireless technology.

"The team aims to help our customers think out of the box, taking their existing infrastructure and enabling it to operate in the mobile space. Using a three-tier model based on data application logic and a mobile mode of presentation, we look to build solutions that can integrate across all forms of wireless networks and devices."

He says the future of mobile and wireless is connectivity anytime, anyplace, anywhere, and it is important that the technology is able to roam across networks seamlessly without interrupting the user.

Whether the device is linked to a company`s wireless network, a hotspot, a broadband wireless network like the one being offered by Sentech or a GPRS network, says Harvey, the user needs to be able to work on a wireless device knowing that it will select the best connection available, moving between the various networks seamlessly.

Harvey says there is significant interest being shown in wireless solutions from IBM`s traditional customer base.

"When it comes to wireless solutions, our customers have been calling us wanting to know what their options are and asking us to help them investigate implementing a wireless solution for their business."
