IBM outpaces storage industry in disk revenue

Johannesburg, 08 Jan 2003

IBM has defied an industry downturn in the third quarter by posting the largest sequential increase in factory revenue and share gains in the storage industry, according to the just-released IDC`s Worldwide Disk Storage Systems Quarterly Tracker, December 2002.

According to the report, IBM grew storage factory revenue and gained two points of share in the quarter compared to the previous quarter. Meanwhile, EMC`s revenue was down 21% sequentially while losing two points of share. IBM`s 20% share in the third quarter was nearly double EMC`s 11%.

The report also concludes that IBM gained more external RAID share than any other vendor with an increase of 2.4 points. IBM introduced the TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (codenamed "Shark") a little over three years ago, and since that time has introduced a full line of open storage products including -attached storage and midrange storage disk servers, as well as new open-standard tape products. IBM also benefited from its industry-leading recovery and Tivoli storage management software products.

"Whilst IBM does not have market share statistics for the local market, we have continued to see good demand for IBM storage during 2002 and will continue to grow our revenue year-on-year in a very tight market. This can be attributed to IBM`s ability to offer total storage solutions that work first time and meet customer requirements," says Ben Gosling, IBM South Africa storage sales manager.
