IBM ThinkPad T42 - more than just some impressive specifications

Johannesburg, 14 Oct 2004

More and more corporates are discovering that their workforce can become more productive as mobile warriors, providing they have a high level of computing power, bundled with numerous connectivity options, flexible hardware that allows them to work in a variety of environments and enough battery life to ensure they can remain untethered for an entire working day.

With IBM`s new range of T42 notebooks performance, flexibility, connectivity and long battery life are the priorities, offering users a package that is light on the shoulder and thin enough to make for increased convenience.

Like most offerings today, the T42 notebooks come with Intel`s latest Pentium M technology for performance, high-end graphics performance to ensure operating systems perform at their peak, up to five connectivity options (LAN, WLAN, modem, Bluetooth and infrared) and numerous options that allow for multiple environments, additional features and maximum battery life.

"But world-class hardware is not the only component that contributes towards a successful solution for the road-warrior," says Brett Walter, product manager at Tarsus Technologies.

"From a data protection perspective, the T42 includes numerous ThinkVantage technologies that safeguard data from theft and from physical destruction. The first of these is IBM`s TCG-compliant embedded security subsystem, which allows users to `lock` their data, provide for more secure user-authentication, data protection and more secure wired and wireless communications - a relative priority for all corporates today."

"Aimed at the safekeeping of data from unexpected events like a hard disk crash, IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore (http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/think/thinkvantagetech/rapidrestore.html) software provides a one-button recovery solution that lets users restore their previously saved system image including data, applications and operating system."

"The effects of the every day knocks and bumps notebooks are prone to are reduced by the airbag-like IBM Active Protection System. This feature uses an integrated, user-configurable motion sensor that continuously monitors and temporarily stops the hard drive when a fall or similar event is detected," Walter says.

"In terms of ground-breaking design, features like the ThinkPad UltraNav multi-pointing system, the IBM UltraConnect antenna and the ThinkLight keyboard light have been created to give users increased ease-of-use."

The UltraNav multi-pointing system combines the latest full-function TrackPoint pointing device with an IBM-customised touch-pad allowing users to work the way they want. Another design innovation is the IBM UltraConnect antenna, which has been built into the display cover for optimal signal reception. This design helps maximise coverage and performance for improved wireless LAN connectivity.

"Lastly, a unique feature on IBM ThinkPad`s is the `ThinkLight keyboard light`, which allows users to work in low-light conditions. Located on the top edge of the display, this tiny LED illuminates the user`s keyboard to let them keep working no matter what," Walter continues.

"It`s becoming more evident that specifications alone do not make a good solution. Road warriors and the companies they work for need to consider what pressures the out-of-office environment will place on the worker and their notebook and procure solutions that match the required functionality accordingly.

"There`s no doubt, however, that IBM`s ThinkPad range provides one of the most feature-rich platforms for mobility today and represents a safe choice for almost every corporate moving towards a mobile workforce," Walter concludes.
