IBM unveils new servers

IBM has released two IBM System x servers featuring new six-core processor technology from Intel, says Market Watch.

IBM's new servers running Intel's six-core processors recently topped four benchmarks, including the first single x86 server to burst through the 1 million transactions per minute barrier on a TPC-C benchmark. This was achieved with an eight-socket system x server running 64-bit IBM DB2 9.5 on Red Hat Linux 5.2.

Kirk Skaugen, VP and GM of Intel's Server Platforms Group, says: "The latest world-record database and enterprise resource planning benchmark results posted by IBM are testaments to the performance of the Intel Xeon Processor 7400 series with IBM's eX4 chipset."

Unisys joins NEC

NEC and Unisys have completed development of the first generation of a common platform for both companies' enterprise servers, says Fox Business.

NEC has begun systems based on this common platform, and each company will market the systems as part of its own branded server line.

The common platform is the result of an alliance agreement between the two companies aiming to provide systems that leverage both companies' expertise in enterprise server products and enable them to reduce research and development costs.

Lenovo debuts SME servers

Lenovo is to enter the global server market for the first time, with the launch of its ThinkServer range of servers, reports ZDnet.

Aimed at small-to-medium-sized businesses, the range will become available at the end of the month and will be sold through Lenovo's established network of business partners.

Pitched as an out-of-the-box solution, the ThinkServer machines will come with management software - the EasyStartup configuration tool, the EasyUpdate utility and the EasyManage performance monitor - and a 90-day trial of ThinkPlus Priority Support.
