IBM has introduced its new line-up of IntelliStations, offering up to 70% faster graphics performance and almost 40% sharper video display than competitive products.
IBM has also moved its Unix workstations under the IntelliStation brand. The brand already includes the world`s fastest growing NT workstations.
The addition of Unix capabilities makes IntelliStation the only workstation product line to address the entire market - from entry-level to the most powerful scientific models - and cover the entire spectrum of applications - from financial, life sciences and electronic design automation to computer-aided design and architecture/engineering workloads.
Says IBM SA`s eServer pSeries sales manager, Akhter Dukanda: "The new mix of Unix and Intel capabilities in our workstation range gives customers more choice of functionality, while keeping their cost of ownership at Intel-based levels. Both the pSeries and xSeries IntelliStation`s are Linux-enabled, giving the client the flexibility of choosing the most cost-effective operating system."
Chad Baker, IBM SA manager eServer xSeries sales, says: "Last year we saw a 60% to 70% growth in Intel-based IntelliStation sales, largely because our close association with software vendors in fields such as CAD, digital media and financial services allows us to optimise our workstations for maximum customer productivity.
"Now, having Unix capability within the same brand means that we can extend that flexibility and customisation on the workstation to Unix users."
The IntelliStation features the world`s most powerful graphics cards, enabling the kind of rapid image manipulation needed, for instance, by automobile and aircraft designers wishing to rotate complex images of components without losing detail or realism.
The Unix workstation, the IntelliStation POWER 265, includes either the GXT6500P or GXT4500P graphics card.
The Intel-based workstations deliver a new standard of functionality and visual quality by offering customers a range of 2D and 3D graphics adapters from Matrox, NVIDIA and 3Dlabs to ATI Technology.
Both the Unix and the Intel-based IntelliStations are available with the IBM T210 monitor, which provides super-clear and refined images at resolutions of 3 145 728 pixels - up to 40% greater than the highest-resolution competitor monitors.
In addition, images maintain their sharpness whether viewed head-on or from oblique angles.
The IntelliStation POWER 265 contains one or two 450MHz 64-bit POWER3 microprocessors, 512MB to 8GB of ECC memory, five PCI slots, integrated dual 10/100 Ethernet ports, three serial ports and one parallel port, and two AC power supplies plus an additional redundant power supply.
It also includes IBM Project eLiza technology that increases reliability, availability and manageability.
The Intel-based IntelliStation is offered in a range of three models, all powered by the latest Intel Pentium 4 and Xeon processors at 2.2GHz processor and enhanced 512KB L2 cache.
The E Pro 6204 and 6214 small-form workstations with 2D and 3D graphics choices require less space and provide more power than traditional workstations.
The M Pro 6229 and 6850 tower workstations with dual-head 2D and 3D graphics solutions and expandable PCI slots allow businesses to easily to grow their business functions.
The Z Pro 6894 tower workstation has dual Intel Itanium chips and 4GB of memory.
