The Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) will run public awareness campaigns to inform community members about its services and how to lodge complaints if they are not receiving value for money from network providers.
ICASA's move to host the awareness campaigns comes on the back of the recently approved National Integrated ICT Policy White Paper, which proposes two separate entities to support the regulation of broadcasting content, and infrastructure and networks.
ICASA currently oversees the functions of SA's communications, broadcasting and postal services sectors.
However, the new ICT policy white paper raises questions about the future functions of the authority.
ICASA says the awareness campaigns will happen across SA's provinces, to engage with communities and impart knowledge about services offered by the authority.
"The campaigns are aimed at driving key consumer protection messages, with an emphasis on the rights of consumers in relation to their consumption of electronic communications, broadcasting and postal services.
"The campaigns will put further emphasis on universal service and access to communication services, consumer protection and choice, licensing, complaints handling procedures, as well as easy and simple ways to manage data costs when using smart electronic devices."
The first campaign kicks-off at the Civic Centre Park in Polokwane on Friday.
Other campaigns will take place in Durban, Port Elizabeth, Gauteng and Rustenburg at a later stage, says ICASA.
