Iceland to get green data centre

A cloud computing company is building what it calls “the world's first zero-emission data centre” in Iceland, according to CCN.

British company, Colt says the data centre will be fully powered by geothermal and hydroelectric sources of energy, which Iceland has in spades.

Eco Geek reports the 500 square metre facility will only take four months to complete. It will house the servers of UK data hosting company, Verne.

The facility will be able to supply 100MW of computer load at any time, and the capacity will be expanded as demand grows.

While data centres usually take up to two years to design and build, Colt's boxes take four months from commissioning to on-site completion, writes The Guardian.

The components will be sourced from around the UK, and assembled at a factory in Tyne and Wear, where they will be tested before being loaded onto ships for transportation.
