iCONet, a networking services company and member of the Hannover Re Group, has successfully completed a project to ensure a fault-free backup environment, in conjunction with Smart Storage Technologies (SmartStor).
The implementation, which incorporates an ADIC Scalar 100 Tape Library, an ADIC Gateway, which is a connectivity and management platform that helps IT departments get more out of their storage networks by increasing interoperability in a SAN, and VERITAS Backup Exec, kicked off mid-March this year and will be used to back-up iCONet's Windows NT environment.
Says iCONet MD, Bobby Sarlie: "We made our product selection based on two very specific provisos: the performance factor of the ADIC Gateway and the level of autonomy provided by the tape library. The combination of these advantages will ensure that we can offer a fault-free back-up solution to our customers. The solution is designed to back-up 1 800GB per day to start with, but is scaleable enough to allow us to expand if needed."
According to Sarlie, iCONet chose to partner with SmartStor because of the storage solution provider's skills and information on a broad range of products. "From the start, SmartStor were highly professional and provided all of the information necessary to our decision-making process," he explains.
"The Hannover Re Group is SA's only independent reinsurer and is currently the third largest professional reinsurer in the country," says Tony Life, executive director of SmartStor. "SmartStor is proud to be associated with them and we look forward to working with them on other data initiatives in the future."
Launched in 2001 as an independent company, iCONet was previously the IT division of the Hannover Reinsurance Group Africa, still handling all of the reinsurer's as well as external companies' networking needs.
