Ungana-Afrika will host an ICT capacity-building workshop in Maputo, Mozambique, on 26 and 27 July.
This will be done with the support of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa, a non-profit organisation (NPO) whose aim is to build and strengthen the values, practices and institutions of an open society throughout southern Africa.
Ungana-Afrika is a SA-based NPO that provides technology support, and helps others initiate technology support programmes, within the development community of southern Africa.
"The workshop is aimed at people who are interested in launching or working with technology capacity-building programmes within development communities," says Ryan Jacobs, Ungana-Afrika project coordinator. "The goal is to give participants more tools and resources for this cause, and to introduce them to one specific support model called eRider."
eRider is a support solution for groups of development organisations that share a common sector focus, geographical scope, or a managing/funding body.
"Providing ICT support and capacity-building to groups of linked organisations naturally facilitates knowledge-sharing and best practices for the network," Jacobs says.
In addition, many organisations are beginning to recognise the value of ICT but lack the funding to independently access the opportunities it offers. Ungana-Afrika therefore assists the start-up of ICT programmes that draw upon central network coordination in southern Africa.
The workshop is one of a series that Ungana-Afrika has been hosting throughout the SADC region. Jacobs says once this series is completed at the end of July, Ungana-Afrika will evaluate additional locations and repeat the events during the 2005-2006 period.
"This workshop series is an ongoing process and we plan to bring it to several new locations within the SADC in the near future," he says.
