IDC: Wyse dominates thin-client market for the fifth consecutive year as overall market shipments grow

IDC bulletin shows Wyse`s domination with more than 50% market share across all channels; thin client shipments grow 30% in 2001 as PC shipments decline
Johannesburg, 11 Sep 2002

Wyse Technology, the worldwide leader in secure, managed thin clients, announced that the company successfully retained the number one position in the thin-client market for the fifth consecutive year, according to a recent report from IDC. Wyse Technology is locally represented by IT WISE Thin Client Technologies.

IDC`s report on the enterprise thin-client market states that Wyse Technology 38% of the overall worldwide enterprise thin-client market in 2001 when counting Wyse branded products, with US market share jumping from 37% to 50%.

Additionally, when including all thin clients manufactured by Wyse and sold by OEM partners, Wyse market share jumps to 50% of all thin clients sold worldwide in 2001. IDC secured information for the bulletin from major vendors and channel partners, as well as through analysis of shipment records.

In January, IDC reported that 2001 worldwide PC shipments declined 5%, and the PC industry witnessed a 12% decline in the US. By comparison, thin clients enjoyed steady year-over-year growth -- with overall shipments for the year growing by more than 20%. Thin-client computing continues to emerge as a secure, managed, affordable and reliable alternative to personal computers in many of today`s business environments. It is common for organisations to migrate task-oriented workers first, and then to expand to general-office workers.

Analyst also predicts worldwide enterprise thin client unit shipments to reach 1.4 million in 2002; enjoy nearly 30% compound annual shipment growth between 2002-2006.

Finally surpassing the one million unit shipment mark (1.09 million) in 2001, the worldwide enterprise thin client market will continue its steady growth with 1.4 million shipments in 2002. According to new research from IDC, Reshaping and Refocusing: Enterprise Thin Client Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2006, this market is experiencing success while overcoming a number of obstacles, including slumping economies and vendor consolidation.

The future of the worldwide thin client market remains bright. "Although prospects for future growth are revised downward to reflect more realistic market expectations, the opportunities for growth are still solid," says Bob O`Donnell, IDC research director of device technology. This market will enjoy nearly 30% compound annual shipment growth between 2002-2006.

The thin client market remains strongest in the US, which accounted for more than half of worldwide shipments in 2001. Although the US continues to top this market, Western Europe is making significant inroads, growing to 36.8% of the total market in 2002.
