Adrian Schofield, president of the Information Industry SA (IISA), has welcomed the official introduction of the Information Systems, Electronics and Telecommunications Technologies` Sector and Training Authority (SETA) gazetted last week.

"It is a tribute to the efforts of all the people and organisations that put so much time and hard work into the steering committee process over the last couple of years," he says.

Schofield points out that it has been acknowledged that the quality of the sector`s submission was among the highest received from any of the 25 SETAs announced by the Minister.

The IT industry will be significantly represented in the authority, with several organisations like the Black IT Forum and the Information Technology Association on board.

Doug Heron has been elected as the first chairman of the SETA and Errol Maherry, long-time training director at the Information Technology Industry Training Board, has been appointed as acting CEO for the new body.

"Now that the preparation has been completed, the real work begins," says Schofield. He adds that it is vital that stakeholders continue to take an interest in the work of the SETA, since this was a golden opportunity to review the skills requirements of the economically vital ICT sector and to channel funds into developing the most urgent needs.

He also urges employers to co-operate with SETA staff by supplying information quickly and accurately, to ensure that a meaningful evaluation of the sector`s competency levels can be completed as soon as possible.
