Increasing the capacity of storage area networks

In a drive to increase penetration of the storage market through company synergies, Seagate Software announced that it has certified the new CompaqStorageWorks TL895 DLT with Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT and the Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option.

These Seagate software solutions are supported as part of the Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS), an integrated hardware/software solution offering DLT Library sharing over a Storage Area Network (SAN), and are delivered as a "live trial" on the Compaq Storage Management Solutions CD.

According to Nick van Noordwyk, Seagate Software`s regional manager for the Middle East and Africa "Seagate Software and Compaq have again joined to provide enterprise customers with an integrated solution for increased storage performance, capacity and manageability," He adds that "The certification of Compaq`s StorageWorks TL895 DLT Library with Seagate Backup Exec and the Shared Storage Option continues to assert both Companies` focus on providing storage management solutions for fibre-attached storage networking that increase the availability of enterprise information."

The new Compaq StorageWorks TL895 DLT Library is Compaq`s latest enhancement to its Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS), a unique integration of application software and industry-standard hardware designed to provide an enterprise-class solution dedicated to backup and restore data in Windows NT and NetWare enterprise environments.

The StorageWorks TL895 supports up to seven DLT 35/70 tape drives and up to 96 data cartridges. The coupling of the high-powered StorageWorks TL895 DLT Library with the functionality of the Enterprise Backup Solution centralises, simplifies, and speeds data management.

The addition of the StorageWorks TL895 DLT Library to the Enterprise Backup Solution also lowers the per server cost for high performance, centralised backup at large customer sites.

Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option enables several Seagate Backup Exec servers to simultaneously share the same tape libraries by implementing industry-standard SCSI Reserve/Release command structures.

The software allows Seagate Backup Exec servers to safely share storage media so available media can co-exist with other Seagate Backup Exec servers sharing the same storage devices.

It also optimises hardware utilisation by not requiring dedicated tape drives and libraries for each backup server and automatically load balances backup operations across all available storage devices. Thus, devices with larger capacity and higher performance may be deployed centrally and utilised by multiple backup servers as needed.

Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT and Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option are currently included in the Storage Management Solutions CD bundled with the Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution which is available now through Compaq`s worldwide distribution network of resellers.

After evaluation, Seagate Software products on the Storage Management Solutions CD can be purchased through Seagate Software`s global network of TeamExec reseller and distribution partners. When purchased as part of the Compaq EBS, Seagate Backup Exec and Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option are supported directly by Compaq.
