Independent testing confirms Applix TM1 delivers fastest response times for operational performance management

Johannesburg, 05 Apr 2006

MCI Consultants, the leading distributor for Applix`s TM1 product in South Africa, today announced that according to recently performed testing by Empirix, Inc, a leading provider of software testing and monitoring solutions, Applix TM1 9.0 provides sub-second response times for hundreds of concurrent users, reinforcing TM1`s ability to support enterprise-wide business and operational performance management applications.

The coupling of the fastest analytic engine with industry-leading Web scalability places Applix in the leader`s role, attacking the complex modelling and real-time demands of operational performance management.

Applix`s TM1 9.0 includes the latest version of TM1 Web (for Web-based business and operational performance management analysis and reporting), which has been completely re-architected based on Microsoft`s industry standard .NET framework for superior performance.

The features in TM1 9.0 deliver enterprise-class read/write capabilities and performance for simultaneous use by hundreds of business and financial analysts, line-of-business managers and senior executives. These new tests support the recent conclusions of The OLAP Survey 5, which named TM1 the industry`s fastest performer, delivering top speed of query and load calculation. In the OLAP 5 Survey, users ranked TM1 with the lowest level of technical issues.

The Empirix testing showed that a single TM1 Web server, running on Intel-based PC servers, scaled to support at least 200 simultaneous users. With the addition of another Web server, TM1 allowed 500 users to work on a single database, accurately processing a series of complex operational and business reports, performing a series of actions that would require frequent updates from the server. The activities included logging in, browsing data, changing and recalculating values, consolidations and roll up.

"The Empirix load and response tests confirm what our customers have been telling us," commented David Menninger, vice-president, worldwide marketing, Applix. "Applix`s unified TM1 is faster and more responsive than competing products. TM1 users can reap the benefits of `real-time` business intelligence and operational performance management enterprise-wide, as this need continues to grow. We expect this proof of our scalability to be enormously helpful in attracting even more customers to TM1."

"The goal of the tests was to simulate real-world transaction volumes across the TM1 Web application, explore the system performance under a variety of load situations and verify that even under heavy usage, most transactions retain a sub-second response time," explained Tom Tracy, director of Consulting Services for Empirix. "Applix TM1 never reached a breaking point, even with the heavy usage and 500 simulated users. End-users experienced no performance degradation and the back-end servers performed as expected during the tests. There were no limitations found on the Web servers or database."

Faster responses for enterprise users expands BPM`s reach

Traditional analytics, using relational or disk-based databases, can leave end-users hanging while they wait for responses. Applix`s in-memory architecture is better suited to real-time analytics, providing faster, more flexible analysis at a lower cost of ownership.

Operational performance management is the next horizon in enterprise-wide business performance management, covering the monitoring, analysis and management of financial, operational, customer-driven and employee-focused processes, activities and transactions, including interaction with the supply chain. As finance has used TM1`s analytics and performance management applications to plan for and measure success, other areas of the enterprise can now use TM1`s flexible modelling capabilities to meet their specific needs. The strategies and applications used for business performance management can also drive operational performance.

Specific test information

* Applix and Empirix performed a series of read/write tests, queuing up 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 users. Simulating a real-world environment, 20% of the users ran a read/write script while the balance were read-only.
* In the 500-user test, out of 23 861 samples retrieved during the test, 64% returned in less than half a second; 85% returned in less than one second.
* In all tests, the vast majority of server response times were less than one second.
