India to get e-tolls
The Pioneer reports.
However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) says it will have a challenge at hand to monitor users entering without a valid tag, as existing laws do not cover such a violation.
The technology is said to help users make electronic payment without stopping at toll plazas and is hoped to reduce traffic congestion and commuting time, Hindustan Times states.
The government plans to introduce a single RFID smart tag to be used at all toll plazas across the country.
This is the first pilot project of its kind being implemented in India and plans are in place to bring the entire national highway network under ETC control within the next two years, Business Today says.
Each ETC lane will also have an automatic vehicle classification system for cross-verification in order to check whether a car has a history of toll evasion.
