BEA WebLogic Application Server Customers Able to Choose from a Wide Range of Non-Proprietary Tools from Symantec, IBM, Macromedia, Borland, and Microsoft

BEA Systems, Inc., have announced that leading Java development and Web publishing tools support BEA WebLogic Server 4.0, a major update to BEA`s award-winning Web application server that began shipping today.

BEA WebLogic Server 4.0 is most closely integrated with Symantec`s Visual Café Enterprise Suite, which simplifies the development and deployment of Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) components on BEA WebLogic Server. Additional Java integrated development environments (IDEs) that support BEA WebLogic Server include IBMVisual Age, BorlandJBuilder, and MicrosoftVisual J++. BEA WebLogic Server customers can also use other EJB and Java-based development tools, as well as leading Web publishing tools such as Macromedia`s Dreamweaver.

Moreover, the BEA WebLogic Server has been integrated with other best-of-breed Java tools, including AssemblyLine from InLine Software, which automates the generation of EJB components, and TOPLink from The Object People, which offers a leading tool for the object-to-relational (O/R) mapping of EJB components to relational databases.

"The breadth and depth of tools that support BEA WebLogic Server provide a comprehensive, end-to-end development solution, helping enable rapid Java and Web page development, debugging, and deployment on the industry`s leading Java Web application server. This contrasts sharply with the tightly coupled tool-and-server approach in which a customer buys into a single vendor`s proprietary product, and gets locked into all aspects of that solution," said Alfred Chuang, president of WebXpress, a BEA company. "With enterprise Java emerging as the standard for Web application servers, customers can pick from best-of-breed development tools and Web application servers. To us the choice is clear: BEA WebLogic Server offers a more comprehensive tool set, while better protecting your investment through compliance with enterprise Java standards."

Leading Tools Vendors Support BEA WebLogic Server 4.0 "BEA WebLogic Server 4.0 represents a significant improvement in server-side Java technology. It addresses enterprise Java customers building complex distributed applications using advanced technologies like RMI and EJB," said Mansour Safai, vice president of Internet Tools for Symantec. "The combination of Symantec`s VisualCafé Enterprise Suite and BEA WebLogic Server 4.0 provides companies with one of the most comprehensive solutions for supporting end-to-end, distributed application development.

Customers will also be able to take full advantage of the first true distributed debugging technology, Single-View, included in VisuallCafé Enterprise Suite. Customers see the BEA/Symantec solution as a big step forward for reliable EJB development and deployment."

"The Object People has been an industry leader in object/relational mapping technology for many years with our TOPLink product line. We are delighted to be working with BEA WebLogic Server, which is recognized as a premier EJB technology and Web application server platform," said John Pugh, president and CEO for The Object People. "With BEA WebLogic Server 4.0, BEA provides a very comprehensive implementation of EJBs, as well as clustering of EJBs, including entity beans. Sophisticated O/R mapping technology is essential for using entity beans with relational databases. Together, BEA WebLogic Server and TOPLink for Java deliver a rich solution, helping enable developers to implement applications using EJBs and transparently access legacy and new data in relational databases."

"The advanced BEA WebLogic Server 4.0, coupled with InLine`s Assembly Line Component Application Development and Deployment technology, helps make it easier and less costly for customers to develop, maintain, and manage mission-critical, EJB-based applications, without compromising performance, reliability, and scalability," said Andy Simmons, vice president of strategic marketing for InLine Software. "BEA and InLine offer products that build upon customers` existing tools and interoperate with existing applications, preserving their investments, while helping enable them to take advantage of the latest advancements in enterprise application technology."
