Leaders from various ICT industry bodies will meet over the next two days in Midrand to discuss forming a single representative body.
Eddie Funde, president and chairperson of conference organiser SA Communications Forum (SACF), says single industry representation will deliver strength in numbers and influence.
"The SACF is convinced there is a need for a unified industry platform such as will be established at this conference, for industry partners to debate issues of broadband and digital migration and to grow participation in ICT," he explains.
It is hoped the new body will become a central point for communications with the Department of Communications. Additionally, it will aim to support the work of the Presidential National Commission on Information Society and Development.
Communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri will open proceedings with a presentation on the importance of uniting the industry in implementing an information society.
Speakers include Finland's Aatto Repo from Finnish Information Society and Development, as well as Shola Taylor from Kemilinks International, speaking on the African perspective on digital migration.
Harrold Wesso and Victor Lawrence, representatives from the ministerial advisory groups on digital migration and broadband respectively, will share their experiences on private-public partnerships and broadband development tomorrow.
