With 92 percent of Find/SVP survey respondents claiming an increase in the movement of information between disparate systems, EMC has added enhancements to its InfoMover software.
"The study showed 84 percent of IS executives have been given the task of closing the "information gap" in their organisations. That is, the ability to provide information to those who need it, when they need it, regardless of what platform that information was created on," says Graham Prime, senior product manager at EMC SA.
"Clearly there was a need to introduce software that would enable high-speed bulk file transfers between any combination of supported mainframes and open systems servers."
InfoMover (formerly EMC`s Symmetrix Multihost Transfer Facility software) provides these capabilities.
"It allows data to be exchanged between Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems via channel connection as opposed to slower network topologies," Prime says.
This adds up to increased file transfer speed, enhanced security and a reduced cost of ownership. Network bandwidth is freed up for other business activities.
InfoMover`s management and flexibility is further augmented by the inclusion of functionality to ease the setup and control of these operations, and, international character support that ensures accurate transfers in the correct format.
The local operation of chemical giant, Hoechst, has used InfoMover to migrate from a legacy mainframe computing environment to a new open systems enterprise resource planning application enabling them to complete the project well ahead of schedule.
Ismail Nana, software manager at Hoechst, says the company took a decision to move from SAP`s original mainframe-based R/2 suite as part of its Year 2000 initiative. "Using InfoMover, between 80 percent to 90 percent of our data was transferred from the mainframe to the HP 9000 platform - all within the Symmetrix system," he says.
The EMC storage system has provided high performance levels on both mainframe and open system operations at the company, reducing the total migration time by 50 to 70 percent. "The product has also been implemented at other large South African corporates," says Prime.
