Within hours of 135 Travelmate 280s, valued at over R2 million, being stolen from Johannesburg International Airport on 13 June, Acer had put an infrastructure in place to track these notebooks.
The still unfound cargo was signed for, using fraudulent documentation, upon its arrival at the airport. Upon notification, Acer immediately disseminated a list of serial numbers to its help desk and technical support where staff will be able to identify this stolen merchandise should customers purchase these items and call to register for their warranties.
Acer has logged the model and serial numbers, and warranties will not be honoured on these products.
"Unfortunately Acer is not in a position to honour the warranty and any repairs needed on stolen merchandise. Anyone wanting to buy a Travelmate 280 is invited to phone our call centre and check on the status of the machine they want to buy before making the purchase," says David Drummond, managing director of Acer.
