Integrat predicts strong mobile growth

Johannesburg, 21 Feb 2006

With the movement of mobile content alone bringing in R120 million a month to SA, the mobile content industry is showing significant growth, says Integrat.

This emerged at Integrat`s Understanding Mobile Technology workshop staged in Johannesburg last week.

Integrat CEO Norman Parkin and Gary Chalmers, Torque IT marketing director and CEO, Africa division, presented the workshop.

Billed as a "snack platter" by Parkin, the workshop touched on explanations of the various components of mobile technology, from short message (SMS), multimedia messaging and interactive voice response, to Application Protocol.

Explaining the growth of the mobile industry in SA, Parkin said there are approximately 1.7 billion mobile users worldwide, with 62 million in Africa and 23 million in SA. This equates to an average of 36 SMSes per user per month in SA, he said.

The movement of mobile content brings in revenue of about R120 million a month to SA, equating to about R1.3 billion a year, Parkin said.

He also made predictions about the growth rate of the mobile industry in SA, citing a R5 billion growth in five years and R8 billion in seven years.

"It`s not about making money on mobile, it`s about making more money out of your business using mobile," he told business owners.

Chalmers pointed out that the growing worldwide trend of prepaid started in SA. "85% of users now use prepaid and it accounts for 90% of new connections," he said.
