Integrating the value of technology across vertical markets

Johannesburg, 28 Sep 2005

Robust, effective information and communications technology (ICT) continues to have a profound impact on industries across various markets and sectors not traditionally known for their ICT capability.

The integration of reliable infrastructure and genuine solutions has helped to raise the level of ICT skills and general proficiency within the medical, retail, financial and travel markets.

Corporate communications infrastructure and networks is no longer the exclusive domain of large, hi-tech enterprises. Today, this technology and high-performance architecture is being strategically integrated into organisations of varying sizes and across many several vertical markets.

As a result, distributors, resellers and service providers dealing in the competitive art of technology distribution and value provision now negotiate with a far more tech-savvy market. Solutions must make practical and financial sense to investors and should conform to the culture and purpose of the business.

Decisions to invest in technology have developed and are more intricate. The choice of hardware, software, networking infrastructure, capacity and skills depends on core operations and related fundamental requirements.

It is not only about securing a return on investment, balancing the total cost of ownership with value to the company and maximising off the investment, it is really about how the infrastructure fits in with the business and how quickly value can be sourced to improve on positioning.

This change in mindshift has helped industries to open the door to new technology and new strategies, especially those that have traditionally shied away from exposure to ICT.

We now see organisations and companies operating in the banking and financial sector, the travel and entertainment arena, as well as medical and retail environment, fully knowledgeable about their key objectives and which technology will help get them to success.

From travel agencies to private healthcare centres and auction houses, businesses are more comfortable with the technology they have on board and how to best utilise the resource. They view technology and solutions as being much more than mere product, but an inextricable part of the company - an extension of the complete offering. Technology is not brought on for technology`s sake, but for the betterment of the business and to work in conjunction with people.

The role of the service provider has always been to demonstrate the opportunity behind incorporating the right technology at the right time. With the extent to which this environment has changed, it is now a case of nurturing long-term relationships and investing in the journey together.
