Intel announces new products, facilities

Johannesburg, 27 Sep 2006

This week will see delivery of the 40 millionth chip based on Intel`s 65-nanometre process, the world`s largest chipmaker announced yesterday at its Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.

Production using the 65nm process started at the beginning of 2006, and since then the company has been focusing its efforts on perfecting a smaller, more efficient production process of 45nm.

Intel has one production facility (fab) - Fab D1D, based in Oregon, US, capable of producing 45nm chips and has announced two new fabs that will also be equipped to create chips based on the new process - one in Israel (Fab 28), and another in Arizona (Fab 32).

These new facilities represent a $9 billion investment for the company, it said.

It also announced 15 new products, based on the 45nm process. No dates were given for the new products, but Intel promises the products will cover all three major market segments: mobility, desktop and enterprise servers.
