Intel Centrino mobile technology provides performance boost with faster wireless networking capabilities

Intel Corporation has introduced the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection, enabling both 802.11b and rapid 802.11g wireless networking capabilities. The technology delivers a new level of wireless network performance for notebook PCs based on Intel Centrino mobile technology.

The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection is a standards-based and WiFi CERTIFIED* wireless local area network (WLAN) solution that allows up to 54 million bits of data to be transferred per second. It is designed to maintain high throughput at longer ranges in office or home environments, along with efficient use of power to enable longer system battery life. The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection is also software upgradeable, allowing it to support future security and other service enhancements.

"With support for open industry standards, the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection offers more than three times higher performance than standalone 802.11b solutions," said Jim Johnson, Intel vice-president and general manager of the Wireless Networking Group. "The improved performance of 802.11g combined with strong power management features help deliver leading connectivity capabilities across a wide range of WiFi CERTIFIED* access points.

"Standards-based solutions are critical to ensure WiFi capable devices work across a variety of networks, ensuring a high-quality, consistent user experience," Johnson said. "The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection is a high-performance solution that will enhance the wireless networking experience for business professionals and consumers using Intel Centrino mobile technology-based notebook PCs."

The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection consists of a communications and radio chip, both designed and developed by Intel at its wireless networking facilities in Haifa, Israel and San Diego.

Intel presented motion picture using wireless computing at Sundance Film Festival

To demonstrate the types of advanced digital media applications that can be transferred wirelessly over the Internet using the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection, Intel and The Sundance Film Festival hosted a technology demonstration at the festival in Park City, Utah. In the demonstration, the InDigEnt motion picture November, directed by Greg Harrison and starring Courtney Cox and Anne Archer, was presented using 802.11g technology to wirelessly broadcast the high-definition film to moviegoers who viewed it on new Sony VAIO* notebook PCs based on Intel Centrino mobile technology.

"Out of the more than 250 films that were screened at Sundance this year, November is the only one that was seen via broadband wireless technology," said Sean Maloney, Intel executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Communications Group. "Broadband wireless technology is going to allow consumers to enjoy digital media in exciting and non-traditional ways."

"In recent years the festival has been showing an increasing number of films that have been produced and displayed digitally," said Ian Calderon, director of digital initiatives for the Sundance Institute. "This year with the support of Intel, the 2004 Sundance Film Festival was for the first time presented a wireless broadcast of a high-definition film to festival attendees. The possibility of experiencing extraordinary quality images and sound on a notebook computer through wireless opens new avenues for the film community, and it marks the next stage in the delivery of digital films to the film-going audience."

Efficient wireless performance with advanced power management and security

The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection comes in an embedded mini-PCI adapter. The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection delivers efficient wireless performance with advanced power management features to enable a longer system battery life+. The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection fully supports today`s security standards such as WiFi Protected Access (WPA) and can be upgraded via software downloads for as future security standards such as 802.11i become available.

The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection also features Intel PROSet for Wireless software, which provides easy configuration, connection status monitoring and the ability to turn the 802.11 radios on and off. It also features advanced profile management that enables multiple setup profiles to connect to different WLAN networks as the client moves between different access points.

The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection is the latest addition to Intel Centrino mobile technology, which combines the Intel Pentium M processor, the Intel 855 chipset family and an Intel PRO/Wireless network connection WLAN solution. Intel Centrino mobile technology enables integrated wireless LAN connectivity, extended battery life, lighter PC designs and outstanding mobile performance and reliability.
