Intel chips to power cloud servers

The chips enable use of multiple servers as a single platform by centres and infrastructure management service providers.

“As part of our second generation multi-core Xeon processors, we have designed and developed chips that can be used for servers by cloud computing providers and builders to offer high performance and energy efficient solutions to end-customers with security, scalable storage capacity,” Intel marketing programme manager, Nick Knupffer, told reporters.

Meanwhile, IT Pro India reveals that Intel has demonstrated technologies to deliver a secure, energy efficient cloud that can be put to use faster. This forms a part of the company's cloud 2015 vision, which focuses more on and green IT.

Intel has called this 'Cloud in a box', which uses two 1U servers that can fit in a suitcase. Besides promoting these technologies, Intel exhibited many technologies relating to security and optimisation such as Advanced Encryption standard Instructions (AES-NI) and Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) that focus on security at the hypervisor (a Virtual Machine Manager) level or below.

The chip maker says its cloud 2015 vision is about sharing of securely across public and private clouds, optimising service based on capability of the device and focusing more on innovation and less on management.

Comms Express reveals that according to Intel: “Realising the benefits of cloud computing requires a cohesive set of open yet well-defined standards that operate across IT infrastructures.”

It is yet to be seen if Intel intends to roll out a commercial version of Cloud in a box, but the chip maker does expect data centres will need to become much smaller and efficient in the future as businesses look to limit their carbon footprints.
