Processor company Intel alleges that VIA Technologies has infringed eight of its patents and has filed four patent infringement suits against the company. The suits were filed in Germany, the UK and Hong Kong.
"Intel invests billions of dollars each year in research and development to create new, patented inventions that bring significant value to our customers," said Peter Detkin, Intel VP. "Those inventions and the underlying intellectual property are the cornerstone of our business and significant assets. Like any other valuable asset, Intel has an obligation to its shareholders to protect the value of its intellectual property."
In Germany, Intel filed suit alleging that VIA`s P4X266 chipset infringes one European and one German patent. Legal documents list VIA and its subsidiary VIA Technologies GmBH as defendants in the case.
In the UK, Intel has filed two suits, one alleging two patent infringements against the P4X266 chipset and three infringements of patent in connection with VIA`s C3 microprocessor.
In the first UK suit, papers list VIA and Elitegroup Computer Systems as defendants and the second lists VIA Technologies Europe and Realtime Distribution as defendants.
In Hong Kong, Intel filed suit alleging infringement of three Intel patents by VIA`s C3 microprocessors and lists VIA Technologies and Trend Electronics as defendants.
VIA Technologies is represented in South Africa by Rectron.
