Intel hits 1.13GHz; 1GHz shortage to end

Johannesburg, 01 Aug 2000

Intel has pulled ahead in the race to deliver the fastest x86 processor on the planet with its 1.13GHz Pentium III CPU. The shortage in supply of its second-fastest chip, the 1GHz, is expected to end soon.

The processor will cost around $990 in 1 000 units for PC manufacturers. According to Tec Channel, a German news wire, the processor`s price could fluctuate depending on demand. Tec Channel also reports that the 1GHz over-demand could soon end, with Intel upping its production of the chip and releasing the processors for general availability, and keeping the 1.13GHz version for PC manufacturers. As a result, OEMs can expect a discount on the 1GHz CPUs soon.

The new processor is available in SECC2 packaging, while the mass supplies of the 1GHz processor will be in flip chip format.

The 1.13GHz outpaces AMD`s current 1GHz Athlon offering on paper, although AMD was first to the 1GHz goalpost. It remains to be seen how the two compare in standard benchmarks. Using BAPCo`s SYSmark 2000 benchmark running under Windows 2000, the Pentium III processor 1.13 GHz delivers a system-level performance score of 208 compared to a score of 197 on the Pentium III processor at 1GHz.

AMD is expected to release its next speed hop by the end of the month. It has purportedly already shipped its 1.1GHz processor to numerous publications for review.

A special cooling system made by EKL will keep the copper processor`s temperature down to 60 degrees Celsius, according to the German wire.
