Intel Corporation today announced the availability of the first technical book on the new PCI Express Architecture. Published by Intel Press, "Introduction to PCI Express: A Hardware and Software Developers Guide" provides developers with key insights and current information on PCI Express, a new serial input/output technology designed to offer low-cost, scalable bandwidth performance that meets the requirements of emerging computing and communications platforms.
The release of "Introduction to PCI Express" is timed well ahead of industry enabling components and platforms that are expected for market delivery by the second half of 2003. Intel is committed to accelerating the development and delivery of PCI Express products in 2004 and beyond in market segments that include desktop, mobile and server platforms for compute-intensive applications such as streaming multimedia, scientific engineering and advanced financial modelling.
"The PCI Express architecture is set to impact mainstream compute and communication platforms, spanning chip-to-chip interconnect, modular form factors and system capability, with performance headroom for the next 10 years and more," said Pat Gelsinger, senior vice-president and chief technology officer, Intel Corporation. "This introductory book complements the specifications to enable leadership product designs."
"Introduction to PCI Express" was written by Intel engineers Justin Schade, Ron Thornburg and Adam Wilen, all of whom are currently working with customers on the PCI Express technology transition. The authors created this book as a companion to the PCI Express Specification specifically to address how developers will implement PCI Express in real projects.
"Introduction to PCI Express" covers topics that will help readers quickly comprehend and apply PCI Express in their product designs. The book covers a brief history of PCI to set the baseline for challenges encountered during its lifetime and provides readers with the need for PCI Express as the next-generation technology. The technology section explains the general hardware and software architecture that supplies readers with an understanding of this high-performance interconnect through additional background and insights not provided by the PCI Express Specification. Finally, the book provides an overview of the technology considerations for implementing PCI Express to help developers avoid multiple design iterations and help speed the development process.
