Intel sends winners of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists to US

Johannesburg, 18 Dec 2008

Four students who won gold medals at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists last month will be sent by Intel to the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the US, where they will compete at an international level.

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, held at the University of Pretoria in October this year, saw learners from 26 regions take part by exhibiting more than 460 science projects. As part of the expo, students were given the opportunity to showcase their creativities and present their science projects in the field of science and technology.

“The expo for Young Scientists provides learners with an opportunity to turn their dreams into tangible products,” says Parthy Chetty, director of corporate affairs at Intel. “It enables them to sharpen their innovative skills and equips them with the requisite knowledge to participate meaningfully in a knowledge-driven economy,” he says.

“It is important that companies engage in science projects and provide learners with relevant information that will help them make informed study and career choices,” he says. “A career in science is hard work, but offers rewarding and exciting experiences.”

The Intel ISEF is the premiere annual science competition in the world exclusively for students in grades 9 and 12. The 2009 fair will bring together over 1 500 leading young scientists from more than 45 countries to compete for more than USD3 million in scholarships and prizes. The top winner will receive a scholarship worth USD50 000. For Best of Category awards, 18 winners will be selected and each will receive USD5 000 scholarship and a new laptop featuring the Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

Sponsorship of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair is one aspect of Intel's multimillion-dollar global commitment to education. Intel has been committed to helping students realise the promise of education for decades. In the past decade alone, Intel has invested more than USD1 billion worldwide to improve education. Today, Intel invests more than USD100 million annually to promote education and technological literacy around the world.

“Through the Intel ISEF, learners' passions will be rewarded, their interests will be fed and a mechanism will be provided to them to connect with each other,” says Chetty.
