Intel has entered the photonics design and manufacturing business. As part of its optical networking division, the company will now make wafers, dies, subassemblies, and even finished modules, for the long-haul and metropolitan optical market.
Photonics is a fibre mining process that allows greater bandwidth over a fibre optical connection. Through the use of very fast processors, the light`s wave patterns are electronically switched and signal conditioning is used to mine more information from a single spectrum. Combined with dense wave division multiplexing, this technology will enable lower-cost, faster fibre connections.
To support its photonics business, Intel recently completed a 70 000-foot design, fabrication, and assembly/test facility in San Jose, California, built specifically for photonic component manufacturing using 8-inch silicon wafers. Intel also recently acquired Templex Technology, which provided additional photonics expertise and a component technology known as Bragg-Grating, a highly precise filtering and mixing technology used in the manufacturing of photonic components.
