Intel unveils Centrino 2

Johannesburg, 15 Aug 2008

Intel has unveiled its Centrino 2 chipset, which it says incorporates improvements that should boost both performance and battery life.

The new chipset platform is Intel's first major Centrino upgrade after its predecessor debuted in 2003. According to Intel, the platform will feature faster processors and better multimedia performance, while using significantly less power.

"Users will be able to enjoy twice the CPU performance when doing processor-intensive tasks like multitasking, compared to the previous generation of Intel Centrino processor laptops," says Intel SA country manager Devan Naidoo.

The company says its Rapid Memory Power Management system will boost battery life, as will its adoption of dual-channel DDR3 memory technology.

New connectivity features in the wireless chipset include support for 802.11n wireless and WiMax wireless .

Notebooks with the new chipset will be able to handle 3D graphics and high-definition content due to the GMA X4500MHD integrated graphics processor. Centrino 2 supports DirectX 10 and is capable of off-loading the processor by taking on heavier graphics loads by hardware-based decoding.

Intel says users will be able to watch a full Blu-ray movie on a single six-cell battery charge.

The company also announced Centrino 2 for vPro, which has security management features allowing remote fixes.
