Intel's Celeron continues to be a great option for budget PC buyers

Intel's Celeron range of budget microprocessors continues to play an important role in the desktop and notebook PC markets. The entry-level microprocessor architecture delivers reliable performance at an affordable price, helping to power a range of cost-effective products for the lower end of the PC market.

That's the word from Diana Hughes, Asus product manager at Tarsus Distribution, who says that Intel has done a good job of evolving the Celeron range to keep up with the needs of the market. "Though serious PC enthusiasts sometimes like to bash the humble Celeron, products based on this microprocessor family often deliver great performance at an entry-level price," she adds.

"Products like the Asus Transformer Book TP200SA and the Asus F553MA, which are equipped with the Celeron microprocessor, for budget-conscious buyers who need decent multitasking at a price they can afford. Celeron is perfect for anyone with basic computing needs and a smaller budget - home users, students, schoolchildren, and workers in small businesses. It has more than enough power to handle Word processing, basic spreadsheets, e-mails, Web surfing, social networking, videos and basic photo editing."

Hughes says that, while Celeron processors lag behind Intel's higher-end products in terms of cache, clock speed, thread count and feature set, budget-conscious buyers should also be aware that there are other computing components that will have an impact on a computer's performance beyond the type of processor.

If a Celeron is paired with decent RAM and a good hard drive, it will perform capably for most computing tasks. Indeed, in many cases, users will be better served by buying a balanced Celeron notebook or desktop with high-quality components than one with a more expensive processor and less, slower RAM or an inferior hard drive.

"There is a good reason why the Celeron brand has served Intel so well for so many years," says Hughes. "It plugs an important gap in the market and enables vendors to deliver affordable products that meet the needs of consumers and businesses who want a simple, reliable computer at a good price."
