Intel`s Pentium 4 goes mobile

Johannesburg, 05 Mar 2002

Intel released its much-vaunted Pentium 4 Mobile processor today, along with a new chipset supporting DDR memory and a 400MHz front-side bus.

The chips will be introduced at 1.6GHz and 1.7GHz speeds, and are based on Intel`s Netburst micro-architecture. They both feature 512kb level-two cache. Intel estimates a 48% increase in performance between the new P4-M processor and its precursor, the PIII-M.

The new chipset, the Intel 845MP, offers external AGP 4X graphics, a 400MHz processor system bus, and DDR 266MHz SDRAM for up to 1GB memory support. It features up to six USB ports and supports deep sleep and deeper sleep low-power states. A second P4-M chipset, the 845MZ, will be released for the value market soon.

Notebooks featuring the P4-M will be available over the next few weeks from members of Intel`s Mobile Channel Leader programme, which locally comprises Mustek, Pinnacle Micro, Digitec Mobile Technologies and Micro Pro.

At Intel`s Developers Forum held in San Francisco last week, the company made it clear that mobile is a major part of its this year. Intel believes that is one major factor driving mobility in the market, and has also announced that it intends to integrate wireless technology into its chipsets and processors in the distant future.
