Intel's reaffirms its commitment to education in South Africa

PC donation programme - first Western Cape school

Cape Town, 11 Dec 2008

Intel Corporate South Africa has announced the launch of its PC donation programme in the Western Cape. The official launch was conducted by the Western Cape MEC for Education, Yousuf Gabru, at the first participating school, Kathleen Murray Primary which is situated in Grabouw, a small village in the Overberg. The purpose of the initiative is to educate teachers and learners to embrace and use technology in today's digital world

As part of Intel's World Ahead Programme, South Africa will receive 5 000 machines over a period of time for deployment into education for government schools. The machines used in this project are classmate PCs which are low cost, robust, fully-functional laptop computers meant for young learners to enhance their ICT learning capabilities. The project is based on the four pillars of Intel World Ahead which include access to hardware and software, digital education content, Internet connectivity and teacher training.

Intel's local PC donation programme forms part of Intel's multi-million dollar global commitment to education. Intel has been committed to helping educators and learners realise the promise of education for decades. In the past decade alone, Intel has invested more than $1 billion worldwide to improve education. Today, Intel invests more than $100 million annually to promote education and technological literacy around the world.

Under the umbrella of the Intel PC Donation project, collaborative efforts have been formed with different ecosystem partners and Intel in co-operation with provincial government, to provide a comprehensive ICT solution to schools. Some of the partners working on this project with Intel include: Eskom and Telkom foundations for solution components and Internet connectivity respectively, Mustek for transport and installation, LearnThings as a content provider, SchoolNet SA for teacher training, PDoE and affiliates, and Khanya, an initiative of the Western Cape Education Department

The PC donation project provides learners with the tools to broaden their horizons and uplift their potential and it provides teachers with a medium to assist their pupils in achieving their full potential. Learners are able to bridge the digital divide and be more productive in today's world.
